I had a great first season and managed to score enough points to win my class!

The surprise of the night was getting the rookie driver of the year trophy.

I’ll be upgrading the front sway bar and moving down a class to F-Street next year to chase Jayhawk Jake again. Also, I’m taking on the responsibilities as the region’s Solo Chair.

Congrats and good on you for stepping up to the board! Over the years  I did region novice director, secretary and assistant RE. SCCA doesn’t happen without volunteers.

Ha! Whatever the RE doesn’t want to do.

In my case, I ended up being the guy who took care of all the sanctioning and insurance for events. That was primarily setting up the sanctioning with the national office before hand, being the guy who held the insurance paperwork during events, and submiting the follow up paperwork and money to the national office after each event.

I also was the RE’s proxy for the division annual meeting and one of the division board meetings he couldn’t make it to (those had relatively little to do with solo, but we’re vitally important for club racing). If you end up doing something like that, you should be well briefed before hand.

I decided (wisely) at the time that being RE didn’t look like much fun. At ages 16-22ish that I was on the board, I would not have been well prepared for the politicing and external facing nature of the RE job. There is a lot of interaction with the national office, and the RE is vitally involved with the division administration. Much of the club racing organization and administration happens at the division level, so the RE is always advocating both for their region’s role and responsibilities as well as having an say in the direction of the division’s club racing program as a whole. There be politics there.
